This is a comparison photo of the digital printed image and image printed using digital enlarger The aim of this execise was to use two different printing techniques to produce a print and compare the results. The first technique was using a digital printer to produce an A4 image. Then the same digital image was uploaded / scanned using the De Vere digital enlarger. DE VERE 504DS Digital Enlarger prints B&W from digital files onto standard photographic material. The DE VERE 504DS creates a “virtual negative” of your digital files which can be projected, sized and exposed onto photographic paper and then processed in the normal way – just like a real negative!

After a few technical hitches we were able to upload and expose the image onto photographic paper. The paper was then transferred into a box and taken into the wet dark room to process like a normal black and white print. I was expecting the wet print to be superior to the digital image, but in fact it was the other way around for me. I found the tones in digital print were richer and had more contrast, whereas the wet print appeared a little flat. So my preference for ease of use, speed and quality was the digital image. However using a digital enlarger like the De Vere allows you to expose and process a wide variety of papers and possibly canvas or materials that you would be unable to with a digital printer.
So they all have their uses. Picnic at Botanical Gardens. Pushed the highlights down to -100, turned the contrast down to -88. Pumped the clarity up to +25, vibrance to +18 and desaturated the colour to -15. On the colour tabs, I desaturated green to -54 then did a split tone with green and blue, pushed the blue saturation to +29 and luminance to +37. Though this image is sharp and there are strong shadows I like the colours it reminds me of some of Edward Steichen’s early colours.

Re: De Vere 5108 manual What do you want to know, I have a manual, I'l be using it in the next 2 weeeks to split my enlarger to transport it as I've just sold my house.
There is a very painterly feel to this image. Little Bay Cliffs. The late afternoon light is quite strong in this image and not flat like many pictorialist images, however I was after a romantic feel telling a story, but due to the distance the girl in the image is too far away to see any emotion. I would need a longer lens than my 70 -200 to convey this. It is not possible to get closer using this angle. I took the highlights down to -100, pushed the shadows to +100, took the white down to -95 and black to -35 to flatten the colours and decreased the contrast. I pushed the clarity to +64 to bring out the definition in the rocks, vibrance to +12 and desaturated colour to -10.
Again I think there is a painterly quality to this image.
